- Today would have been my father’s 68th birthday. I dropped by the cemetery, and was reminded what it was like to be 8 years old again. It amazes me that I had so much fun playing Tombstone Hold’em with Last Call Poker, but that one cemetery absolutely cripples me.
- I can’t quit you, fantasy football. I just can’t.
- Speaking of fantasy sports, I declined to be in a What If Sports fantasy baseball league. I think it’s just too much.
- If you could have any of the super-human abilities shown on Heroes, what would it be? Difficulty: Syler and Peter (i.e. the abillity to learn/absorb new abilities) don’t count. Invisibility and puppetmastery would each be pretty good.
- Anyone for a Beer Festival on November 8th?
- I made this soup. It had too much bean flavor, and not enough squash flavor. And then I pureed the whole thing to a creamy consistency. Next time, twice as much squash and half as much beans.

I received this message as a comment in my previous post, so I thought I’d share it with everyone.
Hi,
We thought you and your visitors might be interested to hear about a new Alternate Reality Game that we’re putting together.
“Traces of Hope” is being launched as the first ever charity online ARG and is being built by the British Red Cross to coincide with its Civilians and Conflict month. The game features Joseph a sixteen-years-old caught up in the Ugandan civil war, separated from his family, hungry and alone in a camp overflowing with thousands forced to flee, Joseph is desperately seeking his mother. But he needs your help…
Registration will open on Sunday 28th but until then there’s a teaser page at http://www.tracesofhope.com and a teaser video at http://www.vimeo.com/1811645
We’d really appreciate a link to the game or any coverage you could provide. Any questions please let me know,
Thanks
Alex
I don’t play ARGs as much (really, at all) anymore due to a number of factors, but I still want to see them all succeed. So click around and take a look.

Acid Tongue – Jenny Lewis: Better than Rabbit Fur Coat. Way better. Still all the great stories and lyrics, but without as much overt country sound. Much more folk-pop. Very enjoyable. 7.5 out of 10. Favorite tracks: “Pretty Bird” and “Trying My Best to Love You”
Rockferry – Duffy: I liked this one because of its bluesy soulfulness. It’s like Amy Winehouse without the substance abuse. It also has a healthy dose of 1950’s R&B thrown in. 7 out of 10. Favorite Tracks: “Warwick Avenue” and “Hanging On Too Long”
We Started Nothing – The Ting Tings: Get out of your seat and dance like nobody’s watching, because that’s what I did…in my underwear. At least I was at home this time. I love the way this album just clears my mind and lifts all the weight off of my shoulders. 8 out of 10. Favorite tracks: “Great DJ”, “Shut Up and Let Me Go”, “That’s Not My Name”
Hearts of Oak – Ted Leo & The Pharmacists: I think I was expecting more, but I should still give it a few more listens. I was expecting Shake the Sheets, but this is too unpolished, even for Ted Leo. 5 out of 10. Favorite track (and reason for purchase): “Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone”
Loyalty to Loyalty – Cold War Kids: Meh. I’m very apathetic after the first listen. There is not enough variety, and no track that is radio-ready. Can’t even give a favorite track because they all kind of sound alike. 4.5 out of 10. I should have previewed this one on iTunes before purchasing.

From supervisors:
[Administration] is rejecting travel requests, so staff needs to get their requests in play at least thirty (30) days in advance.
I thought Dilbert was a cartoon strip based fictional offices.

- Monday sucked, and Tuesday started the same way, but the week has come around nicely.
- Poker. Tonight and tomorrow. I’m excited.
- Anyone want to buy a 1GHz G4 iBook with 1GB RAM and OSX 10.4 (Tiger)? How about a brand new iPod touch?
- I have a skunk living in my shed. I want to burn the whole thing down, because I hate skunks so much. But, thanks to Ask MetaFilter, I’m going to try moth balls and a radio. Feel free to share your advice.
- I really need to start sleeping better. I’ve been exhausted for a week, but unable to sleep.
- This whole economic downturn can stop now. No, really, I’ve had enough with my portfolio and house value tanking.
- By buying a new MacBook, the patio project is going to have to wait until spring due to financial difficulty. New house project focus is cleaning gutters, shed, attic, and basement, and stripping all the copper in my basement to sell it for scrap. I’m going to need a whole lot of contractor bags.

Life has not been kind lately.
- Friday night, I played the best poker I’ve played in a long long time. It was like I knew what my opponents were holding. But I didn’t win the tournament. Suckouts galore.
- The patio project in my yard needs to be shelved because…
- I need tires for my car and a new laptop. My G4 iBook has run out of disk space, and I’m not going to carry around an external hard drive or take all of the music all the drive. At least it took me 4 years to outgrow it.
- I’ve been comfort eating. Which hasn’t helped my weight any.
- The voice mail system in my office is down. So my phone light is blinking, alerting me to messages awaiting my retrieval. But I can’t get into the system to retrieve them. Or stop the FREAKING LIGHT FROM BLINKING! DIE PHONE DIE!
Hey Monday, you’re fired.
