Meeting thoughts

Being in long, large meetings makes my mind wander. Generally, I’m not so important that I am needed to be point man for every discussion that takes place, so my mind likes to meander a bit. Here are a few thoughts that popped up (and I jotted down) in my last meeting.

- Monogrammed shirts are ridiculous. Monogrammed shirts on fat guys with less than average concern for their appearance is hilarious.

- If you are an average state school, bachelor of science graduate who is not the absolute foremost authority in your field, please don’t use a one-dollar word when a 10-cent word will do.

- When stuck in a large, long, boring meeting and there is an attractive person at this meeting, do your best to sit with a line of sight to that person. At least you’ll have something to entertain you when you have a lull in your attention.

Election thoughts

- I’m a complete political junkie. I watched election coverage from 6pm until 1:30am.

- Seeing reaction from around the country made we wonder if this was what it was like for my mother’s generation when Kennedy was elected. Al Gore was my Kennedy, but Obama is pretty close.

- I’m very happy that Obama won, but I was just as impressed with McCain’s concession speech. If he didn’t make that Faustian Bargain to try to appeal to the right-wing base, I think it would have been a much, much closer race. I’ve always liked McCain, he’s certainly a center-right politician, and we are a center-right nation. Why couldn’t he have just been himself from the beginning?

- I sincerely hope that President Obama can enact some real positive policies, and bolster the middle class like he has said he will.

- There are so many New England politicians rumored for positions in Washington under the next administration, I might even be running in a special election to fill a seat!

- My fantasy football team name has been changed from “Yes We Can!” to “Yes We Did!”

- In celebration of Election Day, some co-workers and I participated in a pub crawl on Monday night. Yes, a pub crawl on a Monday…that ended in karaoke. Good thing we had Election Day off.

- It just occurred to me that I never read political blogs outside of Rhode Island blogs. Leave a comment and suggest some for me.

All Hallow’s Eve Eve

- I’m not a Halloween guy. I like hanging out with people, I just don’t like the dressing up part. Mostly because I’m lazy, but partly because my dad used to take me out on Halloween.

- I’m pretty disappointed in Ben Folds’ new album “Way to Normal.” It’s too…I don’t know…avant-garde? Best track: “You Don’t Know Me”; it’s radio friendly, piano pop with an awesome contribution from Regina Spektor.

- I was hoping that Tampa Bay would win the World Series. But maybe now Philadelphia sports fans won’t be so angry all the time.

- The Steelers got beat by my girlfriend’s (and her family’s) favorite team, the Giants, last weekend. New York’s front four had express lane access to Ben Roethlisberger. It was ugly, even though the score was close.

- This Monday (Nov. 3), I’m participating in a pub crawl because I’m so excited about the presidential election. Actually, it’s because I have Tuesday off.

- Speaking of drinking, the following weekend is the semi-annual beerfest in Providence. WOO!

- I really love Brian Clark’s twitter profile photo.

Weekend sports thoughts

- I totally expected the Red Sox to win the ALCS, but I’m glad they didn’t.

- Joe Maddon should have had Barlett sacrifice bunt in game 7, when the Rays had men on first and second with no outs. Best case if he swings is one run scores, worst case is that he hits into a double play. With Iwamura and Upton behind him, I’d rather have runners on second and third with one out, than take my chances with Bartlett swinging away.

- I totally expected Kelly Pavlik to beat Bernard Hopkins on Saturday night. I’m sad that he didn’t.

- I was happy to see the Steelers get another win yesterday. I thought it was 2004 when I saw that Mewelde Moore scored 3 times.

- I need Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, and Matt Prater to get less than 35 points tonight to get a win in one of my fantasy football leagues. Chances of that actually happening is slim to none.

- All three people left in my survival pool picked Tampa Bay yesterday. That was pretty anti-climatic. I was hoping at least one of the other guys would have picked Dallas.

- Michael Bisping totally dominated his fight against Chris Lieben, even though Lieben looked to be in the best shape of his career. Lieben has an iron chin, but Bisping was right about his style being sloppy, consistently landing straight punches.

October 15

- Today would have been my father’s 68th birthday. I dropped by the cemetery, and was reminded what it was like to be 8 years old again. It amazes me that I had so much fun playing Tombstone Hold’em with Last Call Poker, but that one cemetery absolutely cripples me.

- I can’t quit you, fantasy football. I just can’t.

- Speaking of fantasy sports, I declined to be in a What If Sports fantasy baseball league. I think it’s just too much.

- If you could have any of the super-human abilities shown on Heroes, what would it be? Difficulty: Syler and Peter (i.e. the abillity to learn/absorb new abilities) don’t count. Invisibility and puppetmastery would each be pretty good.

- Anyone for a Beer Festival on November 8th?

- I made this soup. It had too much bean flavor, and not enough squash flavor. And then I pureed the whole thing to a creamy consistency. Next time, twice as much squash and half as much beans.

Sunday

- Today really feels like the worst of a New England autumn: cold, raw, and rainy.  I love it.

- Fantasy football is the most stressful thing that happens to me on a weekly basis.

- I played poker Friday and couldn’t hit a hand.  I need to start playing more conservatively, because I got called down with no pair twice, even though I raised preflop and fired all three bullets.

- Sundays are awesome because I watch all the football I can handle, and my friend’s parents cook us ridiculously good food.  This week, it was tortellini carbonara and chicken parmesan.  I do not deserve their generosity.  That’s right, Vin, you missed tortellini and chicken parm.  And you still owe 5 more appearances.  At least you have 1 more than Muoio.

- I already miss the co-worker whose last day was Friday.  We went out after work on Thursday, and threw back a few jagerbombs.  Jagerbombs.

New ARG

I received this message as a comment in my previous post, so I thought I’d share it with everyone.

Hi,

We thought you and your visitors might be interested to hear about a new Alternate Reality Game that we’re putting together.

“Traces of Hope” is being launched as the first ever charity online ARG and is being built by the British Red Cross to coincide with its Civilians and Conflict month. The game features Joseph a sixteen-years-old caught up in the Ugandan civil war, separated from his family, hungry and alone in a camp overflowing with thousands forced to flee, Joseph is desperately seeking his mother. But he needs your help…

Registration will open on Sunday 28th but until then there’s a teaser page at http://www.tracesofhope.com and a teaser video at http://www.vimeo.com/1811645

We’d really appreciate a link to the game or any coverage you could provide. Any questions please let me know,

Thanks

Alex

I don’t play ARGs as much (really, at all) anymore due to a number of factors, but I still want to see them all succeed. So click around and take a look.

Liveblogging? Why not?

I have no fantasy football interest in tonight’s game, but I am a huge Steelers fan.  And, since I’ve never tried it before, I’m going to liveblog tonight’s Monday Night Football game between my Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens.

7:51 - Watching Seinfeld.  My dog is panting like crazy because it is 75 degrees in my brother’s house.

7:55 - Brother took a break to clean his wound dressing.  Five small incisions and the rotator cuff was repaired arthroscopically.

8:02 - He summoned me to see it.  Quite swollen, but doesn’t look too bad.

8:04 - Earlier, I installed 2GB RAM into my and my brother’s MacBooks.  Fun times.  Now I need a new set of mini-tools to replace the one I stripped.  Tom is hooking me up with a recommendation.

8:07 - My brother’s father just came over.  My dog LOVES him.

8:10 - I really like the “EA Sports Virtual Playbook” that ESPN is using this year.  Yay for technology in sports!

8:11 - Oooh…it’s in Pittsburgh.  I didn’t realize that.

8:12 - Hmm…just realized it is Rosh Hashanah.  Happy New Year to my Jewish friends!

8:14 - Ooohh…I like the Steelers alternate jerseys.  They should wear those more often.

8:17 - My brother just gave his father a stack of Victoria Secret magazines because “times have been slow.”  His reply? “Nah, I can’t take them, I’ll make the pages stick.”  He’s 62.

8:20 - Dr. Rashard Mendenhall, please to be not sucking tonight. Same goes for you offensive line.

8:24 - Oooh…an extended cab GMC Sierra 1500 for $20,488?  Not bad.

8:28 - OK, OK enough pregame.  Let’s play ball.

8:30 - My brother and I are discussing the improbability of Shannon Sharpe holding a commentary position when he talks like Mushmouth.

8:31 - There is not a better sportscaster working today than Mike Tirico.

8:32 - I’m so very sick of Ray Lewis.

8:35 - What is going on with Tony Kornheiser’s hair?  It’s kind of scary, to be honest.

8:37 - I wonder what Anquan Boldin’s condition is.  That was a sick hit he took yesterday.

8:38 - In case you want to buy an iPod Touch after seeing that commercial, I have an 8GB for sale. :)

8:39 - I’m also sick of Hank Williams, Jr. But really, who else could do that intro?  Pink and Faith Hill don’t do it for me (musically) with their NBC intros.

8:42 - Already a cheap shot from a Raven on a Steeler.  I shouldn’t be surprised.

8:47 - Here’s hoping that Frazier is not seriously injured.

8:50 - 2 rushes, -2 yards.  Good start, D.

8:52 - Bad penalty, homie.

8:54 - Nice stiff arm, Santonio!

8:57 - What the hell just happened?  3 offsetting penalties?

8:58 - Way to be patient, Ben! Nate Washington is never spectacular, but always reliable.  Very much like a Steeler.

9:01 - Another Steeler false start. Enough with the penalties, boys.

9:02 - Me: “3rd and 12. Don’t take a sack here”.  So what do you think happened? Ben got sacked on the corner blitz.

9:08 - Nice sack by James Harrison.  Just goes to show that Pittsburgh’s linebackers are as good as any in the league. He was backup until last year.

9:12 - Um, Ben, hey.  Why don’t you not throw it to the HUGE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN!!!

9:16 - Man, Polamalu can fly.  Sometimes, I think literally.  He was just horizontal trying to intercept that pass.

9:18 - And then he comes back with a nice hit on a receiver.

9:20 - Aaaand, tie score.

9:22 - That Craftsman commercial music sounds like “Title and Registration” by Death Cab for Cutie.

UPDATE - 9:20am, Sept 30: The internet connection went out at my brother’s house around 9:25pm. Oh well. So much for that experiment. At least Pittsburgh won!

New (to me) music

Acid Tongue - Jenny Lewis: Better than Rabbit Fur Coat. Way better. Still all the great stories and lyrics, but without as much overt country sound. Much more folk-pop. Very enjoyable. 7.5 out of 10. Favorite tracks: “Pretty Bird” and “Trying My Best to Love You”

Rockferry - Duffy: I liked this one because of its bluesy soulfulness. It’s like Amy Winehouse without the substance abuse. It also has a healthy dose of 1950’s R&B thrown in. 7 out of 10. Favorite Tracks: “Warwick Avenue” and “Hanging On Too Long”

We Started Nothing - The Ting Tings: Get out of your seat and dance like nobody’s watching, because that’s what I did…in my underwear. At least I was at home this time. I love the way this album just clears my mind and lifts all the weight off of my shoulders. 8 out of 10. Favorite tracks: “Great DJ”, “Shut Up and Let Me Go”, “That’s Not My Name”

Hearts of Oak - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists: I think I was expecting more, but I should still give it a few more listens. I was expecting Shake the Sheets, but this is too unpolished, even for Ted Leo. 5 out of 10. Favorite track (and reason for purchase): “Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone”

Loyalty to Loyalty - Cold War Kids: Meh. I’m very apathetic after the first listen. There is not enough variety, and no track that is radio-ready. Can’t even give a favorite track because they all kind of sound alike. 4.5 out of 10. I should have previewed this one on iTunes before purchasing.
